on,â Cleo said. Her cheeks flushed, and her eyes flashed with quick anger. âIâve worked with Terry before. He would never set out to ruin a film. I donât believe it for a minute.â
âWhat makes you think he has something to do with it?â Frank asked the young man.
âHey, heâs a master of illusions and stunts, right?â the props assistant answered. âWho better to make us think weâre seeing ghosts and monsters?â
âBut you donât have any real proof that he has done anything suspicious, right?â Frank asked.
âOf course he doesnât,â Cleo said. âCome on, letâs change the subject.â She shook her head and pine needles that had fallen from the tree above flew off her hair.
âI heard they decided to rewrite the script so you wonât be sidelined,â Berk said to Cleo.
âThatâs right,â Cleo said, brushing her hair with her hand. âWhile Iâm looking for dear old dad, Iâm going to fall and sprain my ankle. That way, as long as I feel up to it, we can still keep shooting.â
âWell, looks like you all wonât be shooting before lunch,â Sassy said, checking her watch. âItâs past noon now.â
âThatâs movie business,â the cameraman said, standing. âHurry up and wait, hurry up and wait.â
âIâm going to check in,â one of the extras said. âSee if theyâve got a new schedule yet.â Several of the others left with him.
âHow about some lunch, Cleo?â Berk asked, standing.
âNo thanks,â she said. âI think Iâll go to my home away from home and rest my leg.â With her back to Berk and Sassy, she looked intently at Frank. He could tell she was signaling with her eyes for him to follow her.
âYou need any help?â Sassy asked.
âNo, Iâll be okay,â Cleo answered. âCarmen is waiting for me there. Thanks.â With a last long look at Frank, she climbed into the golf cart. Then she drove off toward a cluster of expensive, luxury recreational vehicles. The celebrity RVs were parked just inside the edge of the woods.
âOkay, Berk,â Sassy said. âI have to meet with wardrobe about the changes to the Bigfoot costume. But Iâve got time for a quick cup of tea first. Letâs go.â
As soon as everyone else in the group had gone, Frank went to Cleoâs RV. Even though it was nearly noon, tall trees cast huge shadows across the area.
âIâm so glad you came,â Cleo said when she saw Frank. âDo you have a few minutes? You said you wanted to see the other notes I received.â
âThatâd be great,â Frank said.
It was dark inside the RV. Cleo turned on the lights, saying, âI sent Carmen to the beauty salon this morning. Sheâs been driving me crazy with herworrying. In fact, she hasnât even seen all these messages.â
Cleo unlocked a drawer in the small desk in the main room of the vehicle and took out a small stack of paper. âSome of these are notes, some are phone messages that I wrote down after I heard them,â she said, handing the stack to Frank. âHow about a soda?â
âThanks,â Frank said, sitting in a large armchair. He began reading the notes: âDo not make âDropped into Dangerâ or youâll find out what that title means!â âYouâll never get out of Tennessee alive.â
âI got some of those phone messages before I left California,â Cleo said, handing Frank his soda. âI think I know whoâs doing it, too. No one else took the threats seriously. Then when Terry brought you and your brother to the hospital, I knew I could confide in you. You will help, wonât you?â
Frank looked at the young star. Her hands trembled, and for a moment he thought she was going to cry. âIâll do what I can,â he said.
