Chapter 4
The Truth
Mary felt scared. âWe have to go,â she said. âWe donât know you.â
âDonât you?â said Arak. âI think you do.â
She turned to Edgar. âEdgar, you said there was someone with you. Who is he?â
Mary stared at her. âEdgar didnât say it was a man. And how do you know Edgarâs name?â
Arak didnât answer that. She said, âDo you remember this house, my dears?â
âWe think we have been here before. But we donât know when,â Edgar said.
âIâm glad you remember,â said Arak. âNow, tell me about the man who left you here.â
âHe didnât leave us!â Mary shouted.
âYes, he did. Weâre here, and heâs not,â Edgar said.
Arak said, âIs this man Mr Blood, the Dark Hunter?â
Edgar nodded.
âI thought so,â said Arak. âListen, my dears. Mr Blood is not what you think. He says he is a good man. But as long as you are with him, you are in danger.â
Edgar thought about all the evil beasts and monsters that Mr Blood had fought. It was true. He and Mary were always in danger.
âYou still havenât told us how you know about us,â said Mary.
The old woman gave her a kind look. âSit down, my dear. I will tell you the truth about you and Mr Blood now. But it will be hard for you to hear it.â
Mary did not sit. âI donât want to listen to you,â she said. âMr Blood is like our father.â
Edgar said, âLetâs hear what she has to say. What harm can it do?â
âEdgar, this doesnât feel right,â Mary said. âSomething bad is going on. We should leave.â
Edgar was angry. âI want to know what Arak has to say! Iâm staying.â
âIf Mary wants to leave, we must let her,â said Arak. âI donât want to keep her here against her will.â
Then Arak gave a shrill laugh. âNot that I could do that, of course. Iâm only a poor old woman.â
Mary ran to the door and pulled it open. Then she screamed.
Chapter 5
Trapped
Mr Blood stood a few steps away from the house.
He was still as a stone. It was as if he had frozen as he ran towards the house. Mary knew he was under a spell.
âWhat have you done to him?â Mary turned to Arak. âIt was you, wasnât it? You put a spell on him. Who are you? What do you want from us?â
Arak said nothing. She began to walk in slow circles around Edgarâs chair.
Edgar tried to get up. But his legs and arms would not move. He could only sit still and stare at her.
It must be a spell! He felt like a fly in a spiderâs web.
As she walked, Arak began to talk.
âYears ago, I took care of two small children. You two children. I fed you, and I loved you, and I taught you. I taught you to be strong. You were very strong,â she said, looking at Mary.
âAnd I taught you to listen to your feelings. That was your gift, my dear.â She touched Edgarâs cheek.
âI donât know what you mean,â Mary said.
âLook at my hand,â said Arak.
On the back of Arakâs left hand was a small tattoo of a spider. It was just the same as the tattoos on Edgar and Maryâs hands.
The old woman kept talking. âOne day a wicked man called Mr Blood stole my two dear children from me. At last I have got you back.â
âNo!â Mary shouted. She ran out of the door, towards Mr Blood.
âHe canât help you, my dear. Iâve made sure of that!â Arak smiled at Edgar. She looked very evil. âDid you know, some spiders eat their own children?â
Outside the house, Mary shook Mr Blood. He didnât move. She didnât know how to break the spell.
Mr Blood was holding a sack in his hand. Mary took a closer look at it. Something in the sack moved.
She pulled Mr Bloodâs fingers open and took the sack.
