a high profile Senator. It just wouldn’t have been possible to have an affair. The press would have crucified me.”
“So what happened between you and that prick?”
She breathed out. “I found out a few facts about him. He had a lot of affairs, too. I just didn’t want to stay married to him anymore. It was one rule for him, and another for me. You men have it so easy.”
“So how come we never read about them in the newspapers?”
“It’s not what you know, but who you know, and what you know about them. Carson has a long reach. He was able to quash any rumors about his affairs, making it appear that I was the guilty party. He knew where all the bodies were buried, so to speak. People in the press owed him. They wouldn’t dare write a detrimental story about him. He had far too much on them for that. It was a case of you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.”
“It figures.” Gabe shook his head. Madi, it seemed, had been used. This wasn’t the picture he’d painted of her in his head. The more he knew about her, the more he liked her. She wasn’t just a pretty face or a quick fuck. In many ways she was a sensitive, vulnerable woman.
When he heard the familiar sound of the pickup returning, he knew it was Ty. “He’s back.”
Madi nudged him. “You’d better go, I don’t want him to find us in bed together. It’s embarrassing.”
Gabe stretched his arms above his head and yawned noisily. “Oh, I don’t think Tyler will be too surprised to find me in your bed.”
“Why? Have you been talking about me?”
“Baby, we’re brothers. We share everything.”
“Don’t exaggerate, Gabe. You can’t possibly share everything.”
He guessed now would be a good time to tell her what excited him and his brother sexually. “When I say we share everything. I mean everything.”
Madi just stared at him. Her mouth fell open in surprise. Eventually she spoke, “Do you think I’m some sort of loose woman?” She sounded annoyed. “You’ve got a cheek, cowboy. How dare you assume that I’ll sleep with you one night, and Tyler the next?”
Gabe knew she was a little pissed at his presumption. But he plowed on anyway. “I was thinking that both of us could enjoy you at the same time, actually, Madi.”
“You’re joking. Tell me you’re joking.” Her eyes flared hotly.
“No, straight up.”
“You mean you and your brother indulge in ménages?”
“It’s a real turn-on. You ought to try it.”
“Count me out, cowboy. It’ll never happen.”
“Madi—”
“Madison to you!”
“Madi, you protest too much, lady. I know the idea intrigues and excites you, because your heart rate has gone right off the scale.” Gabe sensed she was more interested than she made out. He could see her chest rising and falling excitedly.
“My breathing and heart rate are perfectly normal, thank you.”
“If you say so, lady.”
“I don’t like the idea that you and Tyler have been discussing me behind my back.”
“We don’t have any secrets from one another. Besides, you’ve been flaunting your body for the past week. We’re men in our prime. What do you expect us to talk about? Cooking? Dressmaking?”
Her eyes narrowed on his. “I bet you set this all up, didn’t you? Tyler going off on an errand to leave you alone with me. You bastard, you’ve used me.”
“You’re the one who invited me into your bedroom. I didn’t force my way in.”
“Well, take one last look, cowboy, because it’ll never happen again.”
He smiled. She sure did have a temper on her. “It works both ways, sweetheart.” He rolled her beneath him, pinning her to the bed. As she struggled, her green eyes flared hotly. “Quit struggling, Madi. I’m far too strong for you.” He kissed her forcefully on the mouth, and she responded, kissing him back, just as he knew she would. He figured she liked being dominated.
“Madi, I like you. You’ll be returning to Washington soon, why not have a little
