away from all that nonsense and live a normal life.â
Doubledoubletoilandtrouble . âI doubt that Shelby will ever live a ânormalâ life,â Max said slowly. âSheâs unique, you knowânobody else is like her. Itâd be a mistake to try to force her into a normal mode of living.â
âThanks for the advice,â Eric snapped. âBut I have to be the judge of whatâs best. Shelbyâs not known on the west coast. Weâd have a chance out there. Max, youâve got to take my word for itâit would be best if Shelby dropped her police work altogether.â
Best for which one of you? Max wondered, but said nothing.
âI need your help,â Eric went on. âI want you to ask Tee to talk to Shelby. Persuade her to try it my way.â
âWait a minute. You want me to ask Tee to ask Shelby to give up her police work? Why not just ask her yourself?â Either âher. â âWhy this roundabout approach?â
âTee will listen to you, and Shelby will listen to Tee. Shelby doesnât always hear me ,â Eric said bitterly. âLook, Max, Iâm trying to save my marriage. Itâs Shelbyâs aura reading thatâs driving us apart.â
âYou knew about it when you married her.â
âI didnât know it would make me a laughingstock with the men I work with.â
Uh-huh, that was it . âI can see how itâd be rough,â Max conceded. âBut surely Shelbyâs more important to you than they are? Couldnât you just, well, be proud of her?â
Ericâs eyes were slits. âTry putting yourself in my place. How would the men you work with treat you if they knew you could never lie to your wife? Or are they all like Vincent?â
Max laughed, refusing to take offense. âVincent would be fascinated. But I know what you mean. Iâd be in for some ribbing.â
âItâs more than just ribbing. Thereâs nothing good-natured about it.â Eric paused to collect his thoughts. âYouâre married to a gifted woman too, but thereâs nothing special about her gift. No, that didnât come out right. What I mean is that as talented as Tee is, her talent is one thatâs shared by other people. Thereâs no oddity connected with it. Even if she does go back to the concert stage and become the most famous pianist in the worldâwell, youâd be the husband of a celebrity, thatâs all. You wouldnât be laughed at because of it.â
So Eric looked upon his wife as something of a freak. Max tried to turn the conversation. âThat may happen yet. I thought I had Tee talked into accepting an engagement with the New Orleans Symphony, but she balked at the last minute. But I think sheâs coming roundââ
âWill you ask her? To talk to Shelby?â
Max shook his head. âI canât do that, Eric. Thatâs asking her to conspire against her own sister. You know how close they are.â
âThen just tell her that I asked for her help. Let her make up her own mind.â
Max thought it over. âAll right, I guess I can do that. Iâll tell Tee what you want her to do.â
âThatâs all I ask,â said Eric.
Once that was settled, the two men found they didnât have anything more to talk about. They left the bar separately, each slightly disappointed in the other.
CHAPTER 14
ECCE FEMINA
âWeâd put her on retainer if we could get funding,â Sergeant Luis Delgado was explaining. âAs it is, we just call her in as often as the budget lets us. On a consultant basis, you understand? Itâs not goodâtoo hit-and-miss. One of these days weâre gonna need her real bad and sheâll be out in the boonies working with some other police department.â
âHow come sheâs never mentioned in the papers?â Kevin Gilbert wanted to know.
âHer choice. Itâs
