and he already had some experience riding Four-Star â heâd gone clear on the cross-country at Adelaide in Australia last November on his talented mare, Queen Latifah.
âI could use a groom if youâre available, Stella?â Shane said, giving her a cheeky grin.
âSorry,â Stella smiled back, âIâm Team Issie.â
âMaybe I can change your mind over dinner?â Shane said, flirting shamelessly with her. âMaybe you and I could go get some food after the meet-and-greet is over?â
âIâd love toââ Stella began but Avery interrupted her.
ââbut she canât.â He finished Stellaâs sentence. âStella has an early start tomorrow morning at six to get Comet ready for his first day of training. Iâm sorry, Shane. Iâm sure sheâll have time to catch up with you after the competition is over, but the girls are on a nine p.m. curfew until then.â
âYouâre kidding me!â Stella was wide-eyed.
âDo I look like Iâm kidding?â Avery asked.
âSo what happens if Iâm not back to my room before nine?â Stella pouted. âDo I turn into a pumpkin?â
âNo,â Avery deadpanned, âyou turn into an unemployed groom.â
Stella looked furious, but Shane could see that they werenât going to talk Avery around. âItâs OK,â he said. âWe can catch up tomorrow and have lunch maybe?â
âSure,â Stella said. She was trying to act cool, but her flushed cheeks and shining eyes showed just how thrilled she was to see Shane Campbell again. Sheâd never quite got over the boy sheâd described as âthe worldâs best kisserâ!
âItâs almost like a Havenfields reunion tonight,â Shane continued, referring to the farm where theyâd first met when Stella and Issie had travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Express Eventing Challenge. âThereâs you guys and me⦠and Tara.â
âTara?â Issie was shocked. âTara Kelly is here?â
âYeah,â Shane nodded. âI saw her just a moment ago. Hey, there she is! Tara!â
He gave a wave across the room and a cool, elegant woman with walnut-brown hair, wearing cream jodhpurs and a white blouse, waved back and came over to join them.
âIssie, Stella and â oh my goodness, Tom Avery!â Tara smiled warmly as she embraced her old friend. âHow good to see you in Lexington!â
âYou too!â Issie grinned. âI didnât expect to see you here.â
âWell, itâs hardly that surprising, is it?â Tara said. âI do live here, after all.â
Tara Kelly had once been a world-famous eventing rider, but by the time Issie met her she had given up competing in favour of teaching. Tara wasnât just a teacher, however, she was also the chief talent scout for the legendary Blainford âAll-Starsâ Academy â an elite equestrian boarding school in Lexington, Kentucky.
Tara had once offered Issie a place as a pupil at her school â and although Issie had turned it down, there was no bad blood between them. In fact, Issie was thrilled to run into Tara once more.
âSo why are you at this meet-and-greet?â Avery asked. âDonât tell me youâre thinking about coming out of retirement and riding in the Four-Star?â
Tara shook her head. âMy riding days are well and truly behind me, Tom.â
âTaraâs already won Lexington three times!â Issie pointed out. âShe needs to give the rest of us a chance!â
Tara smiled. âThatâs very kind of you, Issie, but I think I should warn you that Iâm not leaving the field completely open. One of my former star pupils from Blainford is competing. Iâm here as his trainer.â
âAnd who is this former pupil?â Avery asked.
âAh,â Tara looked around the room.
