under those conditions?â
âBrad might hold on another year. The X Slash Xâwell, two years, maybe three.â
âAnd how long do you think it would take the capital syndicate to decide theyâd better get rid of the Lazy G?â
âTheyâre Eastern promoters, not Texas cattlemen. Theyâd sell out to anybody who made them an offer.â
âWhere would the Circle Star be then?â
âSurrounded by strangers.â
âOr the cartel.â
Ki stared at her, his mouth open. Then he said slowly, âDo you really thinkââ
âYes I do. As long as thereâs a Starbuck here, the Circle Star will be one of their prime targets.â
âI suppose the cartel could have gotten the idea of starting the old Laredo Loop up again,â Ki frowned. âIt wouldnât be too hard for them to get a bunch of rustlers together in Mexico, outlaws whoâd know how the Loop works.â
âRemember what Brad said this evening. There are plenty of men in Mexico with guns for hire.â
âBut doing what youâve dreamed up would take them years!â
âYou know how the cartel works, Ki. They donât count time and costs, as long as they see a chance to win in the end.â
Ki nodded thoughtfully. âYes. Theyâve already proved that by the years and the money they spent fighting your father.â
âAnd if I can imagine a plan like the one Iâve just told you about, they can too. Theyâre not stupid.â
âNo. Theyâre not. It wouldnât take them long, either, if they really are working on the kind of scheme you described.â
âEven if it cost them a fortune, theyâd wind up owning a spread bigger than the capital syndicate got,â Jessie pointed out. âTheyâd make money, in the long run.â
âAnd theyâd haveââ Ki stopped short.
âTheyâd have eliminated the Starbucks,â Jessie finished for him, her voice bitter.
âYes. But I canât see you just letting them get away with it. â
âOh, weâre going to fight. Even if everything Iâve talked about is just a wild dream, something Iâve imagined could happen, weâll fight.â
âThatâs hardly a surprise, Jessie. The question is how.â
âWeâll have to find out who and what weâre fighting, first.â
âA trip to Mexico?â
âYes. But first, a visit to Fort Chaplin.â
âTo investigate Lieutenant Joseph Farnam?â
âIâm sure that when we do, weâll find out thereâs a âJuniorâ after his name.â
âBrad might be able to tell us that,â Ki suggested.
âPerhaps. But I donât want Brad to know anything about our plans. Or what weâve been talking about tonight.â
Ki nodded. âThereâd be no way of stopping him, if he found out what weâre planning.â
âHeâs not in any condition to go back to Mexico, Ki. A trip like that would more than likely kill him.â
âWhen do we leave?â
âItâll take us most of tomorrow to get ready. We canât even begin to make any plans until Brad starts back to the Box B.â
âFort Chaplinâs a long dayâs ride from here, Jessie,â Ki reminded her.
Jessie shrugged. âWeâve made long dayâs rides before. And will again, Iâm sure.â
âDay after tomorrow, then?â
âYes,â Jessie agreed. âDay after tomorrow, at daybreak.â
Chapter 5
âUnless Iâm wrong, weâll be in sight of Fort Chaplin before sundown,â Ki told Jessie across the coals of the small fire heâd kindled for their noonday meal.
They both sat with folded legs, facing one another across what was left of the small, wood-conserving fire over which Ki was boiling water for their noon tea. Jessie wore her range clothing: tight, well-broken-in denim
