up.  “It wouldn’t be forever, we
could come back here.  Hell, I don’t care where we go as long as your
there.”

Cassie rested her head against his chest and breathed in the smell of
him.  Everything about him was like home for her.  She missed his
smile, the way he said her name, the way he always believed in her even when
she didn’t believe in herself.  “Oh Gunnar, you know how I am,” she looked
up into his eyes.  “You know this would never work.”

“I know nothing works when you’re not around,” he grabbed her face between his
hands and stared into her eyes, never breaking the contact as he kissed her,
molding his body to hers as he moved his lips to her cheek and her neck and the
hungrily back to her lips.

Cassie was so confused she couldn’t think. Her body was on fire everywhere he
touched and she had never felt so alive.  She was humming when a voice
sliced through the air.

“Get a room,” someone yelled out the window of a moving car, bringing Cassie
out of her trance and back to reality.

She stepped back and put her hand out to stop him when he tried to close the
distance again. “No Gunnar,” she said more forcefully than she meant to.
“I can’t do this with you right now.  I have plans, and I’m supposed to be
somewhere, and I need to go.” She went the other way and was almost back to her
car when she heard him.

“Jake Larson made bet with Brandon that he could nail you on Grad night.”

Cassie’s stomach lurched.  “Oh, of course, I almost forgot.” Cassie
couldn’t believe what lengths he would go to, to change her mind.  “I am
so un- loveable and unattractive to anyone but you, a guy would have to be
making a bet to want to be with me right?”

“No, not right.  Any guy with half a brain would want to be with you, but
this guy is no good, Cass. You can’t go through with this, you’ll just end up
being one of many.”

Cassie unlocked her door and sat down inside.  She tried to close the door
so she didn’t have to hear any more, but he stopped her before she could shut
him out.  “You don’t know him like I do,” she started to cry and hated
herself for being so weak.  “He wouldn’t do that and for you to say so is
mean, Gunnar.”

“I’m sorry Cassie but it’s the truth.”

“You’re just jealous!” she started her car and tried to get him to step back, but
he didn’t move.

“You’re damn right I’m jealous!” his face was inches from hers.  “I have
had to watch you for the last two months kiss him and sit there while he put
his hands all over you, and I hated it.  But you made your choice and I did
my best to leave you alone but then I heard about the bet and I knew I had to
see you and tell you how I felt.  I had to tell you.  Please don’t
let him touch you.”

Cassie put the car in gear and began to back up, forcing him to back off.
“We’re done here Gunnar, I have to go, and there’s nothing you can say that’s
going to change my mind.”  She said the words and almost stopped when she
saw the tears that were streaming down his face.

“Fine, you really want to do this after everything I’ve said to you, then
go!  But don’t come crying to me when it’s all over, ‘cause I will never
forgive you for this. Ever!”

Cassie pulled the door closed and sped off leaving him standing in the middle
of the road.

the bathroom in time to hear Jake talking on the phone with Brandon. She went
