off-limits.
When Zee got back downstairs, her friends were gathered around the Wii, playing baseball.
âWas Ginny up there?â Ally asked Zee.
âShe was taking a nap,â Zee told her friends.
âA nap?â Chloe said. âI didnât know she ever slept.â
âIâm relieved,â Jasper said without taking his eyes off the video screen. âI thought sheâd taken off with the snacks, never to be seen again.â
âWell . . . sheâs here, but the snacks arenât,â Zee explained. âShe didnât get a chance to make anything today.â
In shock, Jasper spun his head around to look at Zee. He struck out in the game. âOh, bother!â he said. âIâm so upset, I canât even concentrate on baseball.â
âSorry, guys,â Zee apologized.
Missy shrugged. âItâs not a big deal. Your momâs snacks are fun and all, but thatâs not why we came over.â
Ally popped up out of her seat. âLetâs see whatâs in the cabinet.â
Jasper put down his game control and went into the kitchen with the others. They pulled out rice cakes, almond butter, cheese, and crackers.
âAaah, a fine snack indeed,â Jasper said, rubbing his belly.
âI guess,â Zee said. She knew that she was feeling badly not because of the food but about the fact that her mother had forgotten her and her friends.
âIt must be really weird to have two bodies growing inside of you,â Ally said as she smeared almond butter on a rice cake. âLike aliens.â
âMy mom says that when she was pregnant she used to look down and see her stomach moving around! My dad called it the Baby Channel,â Chloe told her.
âDefinitely alien forces at work,â Ally said matter-of-factly.
The friends laughed, but Zee was still worried.
âWas your mother always tired when she was pregnant with twins?â Zee asked Missy.
Missy thought. âI donât really remember,â she said. âI was only five when they were born.â
âSheâs not going to be pregnant forever,â Ally reassured Zee.
âYouâre right,â Zee said, perking up a little.
Then Zee noticed a strange look on Missyâs face. âWhat?â she asked.
âWell . . .â Missy hesitated.
âWhat?â Ally pleaded.
âIf you think your mom is tired and forgetful now, just wait till she actually has the babies,â Missy explained. Zeeâs stomach dropped, afraid of what Missy would say next. âYour dad, too. When your parents arenât feeding them, changing their diapers, or giving them baths, theyâll be sleepingâprobably on the couch.â
âSounds bad,â Ally put in.
âIt is,â Missy said. âYouâll forget what homemade snacks taste like.â
âI think it would be fun to be a big sister,â Chloe said. âThe twins will probably think that Zee is the most awesome person in the world.â
Zee smiled. Lately, sheâd been so busy thinking about losing her parents, she hadnât even considered what sheâd be gaining.
âThat partâs cool,â Missy agreed. âUntil the screaming starts.â
âScreaming?â Zee gulped. âFor what?â
âAnythingâand everything ,â Missy explained.
âI thought you were too young to remember,â Chloe reminded her.
âOh, I remember the screaming. I recommend you keep your iPod on twenty-four hours a day.â
âIâll be here for you, Zee,â Ally said. âJust log onto Bluetopia and find me. Oh! That reminds meââ she said to Jasper. âI know you said we shouldnât invite anyone else, but I was thinking it would be really cool if my French friends were on Bluetopia, too.â
âWe definitely need more people for the Fashionista group,â Missy pointed
