passed. âOkay.â
That was it. Just okay.
It was a damned shame she didnât love him. At least not the way she still suspected he loved her. He would do anything for her.
âCome with me.â She headed for the hallway and the door to the basement.
âWhereâs Tracy?â he asked.
âAt Davidâs. Sheâll be spending the day there.â
âAt your request?â
âNo.â
âDoes she know about whatever is going on?â
âNo.â
âOkay.â He said nothing more until they reached her bedroom.
Lisette stood quietly beside him, fighting the urge to chew a thumbnail, as he stared down at Zach for several long minutes.
âWhereâs the shovel?â he asked.
âThe shovel?â she repeated, confused.
âYeah. You want me to bury him, right?â
Her eyebrows flew up. âWhat? No. He isnât dead.â
âHe isnât? I donât hear a heartbeat.â
âItâs there. The pauses between are just very long.â
âOh. Right. There it is. I just heard one.â Another moment passed. âSo, who is he?â
Lisette frowned up at Ethan. âWait. What exactly did you think had happened here?â
He shrugged. âI figured you must have brought a mortal home, gotten carried away, and accidentally killed him.â
âDuring sex?â she asked incredulously.
âHe is half naked,â he pointed out. âAnd you said Seth would be pissed. You know how protective Seth is of mortals. He does not react well when an immortal inadvertently kills one.â
âWhen have you ever known me to engage in rough sex?â
âQuebec. 1985.â
She opened her mouth, paused, thought about it, then nodded. âOkay. Youâre forgiven.â
He sent her a sly glance from the corner of his eye. âFor 1985?â
She unsuccessfully fought a smile. âNo.â
He laughed. âThen for what?â
âFor drawing the freakiest conclusion you could draw from this situation.â
Still grinning, he shrugged. âIt was inevitable. I have sex on the brain tonight.â
âSo I noticed.â After another minute, she nudged him with her shoulder. âI canât believe you were just going to grab a shovel and bury the body, no questions asked.â
Again he shrugged. âYou know Iâd do anything for you. Whatâs this guyâs story, anyway? What do you want me to do?â
âPatch him up?â she asked hopefully.
âWhy would that piss off Seth? Like I said, he loves mortals.â
Lisette motioned to Zach. âHe isnât mortal, Ethan. Did you fail to notice his wings?â
âThose are real?â
âYes.â
âThen heâs immortal. Why would patching him up anger Seth? Seth is even more protective of us than he is of humans.â
She bit her lip. âSeth isnât terribly fond of him.â
âMeaning . . .â
âAll evidence points to him being on Sethâs shit list.â
Ethan whistled. âSo you thought youâd try living dangerously for a while.â
Now she shrugged.
His look turned discerning. âLike him a bit, do you?â
Sometimes she thought Ethan knew her even better than her brothers did.
Her gaze shifted to Zach as she debated whether or not she should speak the truth, then back to Ethan. âI donât know. Iâm . . . drawn to him. I donât know why.â
Had she not been paying such close attention, she would have missed the tiny muscle that flexed in Ethanâs jaw.
His gaze slid to Zach. âLucky bastard.â
âEthanââ
âLet me see what Tracy has in her medic bag.â Spinning on his heel, he left the room.
Perhaps this hadnât been such a good idea.
Returning, Ethan sat on the edge of the bed and started digging through Tracyâs first-aid bag.
It was actually a diaper bag. Diaper bags have all kinds of
