Chapter 10

The sun is shining bright the next morning as I open my eyes. I roll over and see that Rhett is lying on his side, smiling at me and I can’t help the smile that crosses my face also.
    “Good morning beautiful,” he says.
    “Good morning handsome,” I reply.
    “Last night was crazy.”
“I know. Tell me about it. I’m so glad that we were able to get past the small problem that we were having.”
He twirls his fingers through my hair and looks at me in my eyes. “Look, Jessica I know that we just took a big step forward in our relationship but…”
    “But what?” I ask
“We just have to take things slow. It’s very complicated and I don’t want to mess everything up.”
“I think we’re pass the slow level, don’t you? We just had sex all night and now you want to push the slow motion button?”
He sighs. “Look, I just think that we need to avoid telling people, that’s all.”
    “People like who?” I ask.
“The investors and my Mom. I know this will probably change everything with them,” he says.
“Why? Because of who my father is and what he did? I am nothing like my father, you know,” I say growing more offended by the second. “I am my own woman.”
He grabs my hand. “No sweetie, I don’t think that you are anything like your Dad but you know how this stuff works. They don’t care if you’re not him. Just the simple fact that you’re related to him is enough to send them packing.”
    I sigh… because I know that he’s right.
“I know… but it’s just hard that we have to hide our relationship when I just want to shout it from the top of the building.”
He laughs. “You can, but let me make sure that I have everything in order first. You know that people in that company are planning my downfall and I don’t want them to use this as the ammo they need to knock me down as president.”
“So you really are scared huh?”
“More than you’ll know. It’s just so much pressure and I don’t want you to feel as if you’re to blame if something goes wrong. I’ve been messing up for years but I know this will probably just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”
“I understand. I wouldn’t want to do anything that would harm you or your company. I know that you’re trying to do the right thing now and I will never want to come in between that. Even if I want to tell the whole world about us, I will hold it in just for you.”
He smiles. “Thank you. I know that’s asking a lot.”
“I know, but I don’t mind. But why do we have to hide it from your Mom? She doesn’t seem like she’s as shallow as the investors. Maybe she will understand us a lot better than anyone else.”
He shakes his head. “No, she wants me to date a certain type of girl with a certain type of class. Also known as any boring rich girl who’s single.”
“So it really is that bad?”
    “Yes, it is.”
    “Wow, I can’t imagine.”
“It’s fine. It’s been that way since my father died. She’s always pushing girls on me but I think it’s because she knows I’m lonely and she just wants me to be happy.”
“And you don’t think that she thinks a girl like me could ever make you happy?”
He shakes his head. “No, she only believes in images. Probably more than I do. This would probably crush her.”
“And I always thought your Mom was so sweet.”
“She is sweet, don’t get me wrong, but her intentions and view on my life are a little skewed. I entertain it just so that she can think that she is helping me but I usually tell the girls to hit the door after she leaves.”
I laugh. “I can totally see you doing that.”
He laughs also. “Yes, it’s just that the girls that my Mom pick out are so… blah. I know that they are rich and can help me out but I don’t want to be bored to death either. Jessica, you are a breath of fresh air. Believe me when I tell you
