the state of the bedroom in which you found the body of Mrs. Madison, is it?â
âNo, sir.â
âHow did Janice LePlane die, Officer Hill?â
âShe killed herself. That was the coronerâs verdict.â
âHow did she kill herself?â
âShe took pills.â
Morty retrieved the photograph from Officer Hill, gave it to the foreman of the jury, then walked back and handed the witness a second photograph.
âDo you recall this room, Officer Hill?â he asked
âYes,â the witness answered. âI donât remember the womanâs name, though.â
âHer name was Martha Gillespie.â
âOkay.â
âHow would you describe Mrs. Gillespieâs room, Officer Hill? Would you say that itâs cluttered?â
âYes.â
âAnd there are dirty plates and papers all over the room, isnât that true?â
âYes, there are.â
âHow did Martha Gillespie die, Office Hill?â
âI donât recall.â
âWas it suicide?â
âI donât think so, but Iâm not sure.â
âWas it murder?â
âNo.â
âIn fact, Martha Gillespie died of natural causes, didnât she?â
âYes, she did.â
Morty took the photographs Officer Hill had just identified and gave them to the jury foreman, who stared at them briefly, then passed them to the juror to his left.
Morty was now back at the podium. âOfficer Hill, did you return from either of these rooms, the dead bodies you observed in cluttered rooms, and speak to anyone at police headquarters with regard to any suspicions you had regarding the manner of those deaths?â
âNo, I did not.â
âThen why did you have any doubts as to the nature of Mrs. Madisonâs death?â
Officer Hill shifted uneasily in her seat. âIt was just a feeling, I guess.â
âJust a feeling,â Morty repeated with a pointed glance toward the jury.
âYes, sir,â Officer Hill admitted a little hesitantly.
Morty paused, pretended to study his notes. Then he produced another photograph and handed it to the witness.
âHave you seen this picture, Officer Hill?â he asked.
âYes.â
âItâs Mrs. Madison, isnât it?â
âYes, it is.â
âTaken by the coroner,â Morty added.
âI donât know who took it.â
âOkay, but you made mention that Mrs. Madison had put on makeup, isnât that right?â
âYes.â
Morty smiled. âI notice that youâre wearing lipstick, Officer Hill. And today, right now, youâre wearing other makeup, as well?â
âA little,â Officer Hill responded warily.
âBlush?â
âA little, yes.â
âAnd like a great many women you apply a little makeup to enhance your looks, isnât that correct?â
âYes.â
âAre you married, Officer Hill?â
âYes.â
âDo you sometimes put on makeup in order to please your husband?â
âI guess I do.â
âBecause you want to look beautiful to him, correct?â
âYes.â
âBecause you love him?â
âYes.â
âWould you say that Sandrine Madison might have felt the same about her husband?â
Mr. Singleton rose immediately. âAsking for a conclusion, Your Honor.â
His objection was sustained, but Morty had made his point and he knew it.
He nodded softly. âThank you, Officer Hill. No further questions.â
He was back in his chair at the defense table seconds later, looking quite satisfied with his cross-examination of Officer Hill.
âShe despised me from the beginning,â I said after Morty returned to his seat beside me.
Mortyâs eyes shot over to me. âFrom the beginning?â
âWhen she first laid eyes on me.â
âWhen you met her at the door, you mean?â
âYes.â
Suddenly I realized that
