expected. Â âI can beat the shit out of you, Boston, anytime, anywhere,â he shouted.
âMister Shamrock?â Â The voice of Vice-Principal McDonald boomed from down the hall. Â âWatch your language, young man!â
David and Billy continued to move to the exit. Â The pushed open the door and went outside just as the most-feared adult at school pulled Matt Shamrockâs right ear lobe. Â David and Billy heard the word âdetentionâ mentioned before they were out of earshot. Â
âI guess youâll make it home in one piece after all,â Billy said.
âYeah. Â Thanks for sticking up for me.â
âNo problem. Â I donât think it did any good, though.â
As they walked across the school parking lot toward the sidewalk, David felt his heart pounding. Â He often got palpitations if something caused his adrenaline to pump. Â Sometimes it happened if he was excited, nervous, or anticipating something such as a doctorâs visit, a test at school, or a conversation with one of the pretty girls. Â He had to be careful, his doctor had told him. Â Whenever he had palpitations, David was to stop what he was doing and breathe deeply. Â He was to relax and mentally push the anxiety away. Â Sometimes he could do it pretty well. Â Other times it was more difficult, depending on the situation.
David stopped walking and sat on the curb.
âYou all right?â Billy asked.
âYeah, I just gotta sit a minute,â he said. Â He closed his eyes and breathed. Â
âYou sure?â
âShhhh.â
âI can go get someone if you want.â
âQuiet, Billy! Â Iâm trying to meditate. Â Itâs okay, really.â
âSorry.â
âYou go on. Â Come over to the apartment later. Â I gave you the address.â
âIâll stay if you want.â
âNo, really. Â Go on. Â I think I want to be alone,â David said. Â
âWell, all right. Â Iâll be over in an hour.â Â
âOkay.â
Billy walked on. Â David figured that one advantage to living in the new apartment was that he was closer to Billyâs house. Â They had planned to walk to and from school together, at least until they got into high school. Â
David continued his breathing exercises and eventually calmed down. Â The scary thumping in his chest eased up and finally he was able to stand and continue the trek home. Â
He hoped this wouldnât become a daily occurrence.

D avid opened the door and found Billy standing on the stone stoop where Diane had placed the âWelcomeâ mat.  The apartment was on the ground floor of the complex and in many ways was more like a duplex than an apartment.  Each dwelling had its own separate façade that indicated the apartments were individual homesâthey were just connected to each other in one large building. Â
âWhatâs up?â Billy asked.
âNothing. Â Come in.â
Billy walked inside and David shut the door. Â âYou feeling better?â
âYeah.â
Billy nodded his head in artificial appreciation as he dropped his backpack on the floor and moved through the main room. Â The apartment was still full of boxes and other signs of a recent move. Â âSo this is the new place,â he said. Â âNice.â
âItâs all right. Â We sure donât have a lot of room.â
âWhat did you do with all the stuff that wouldnât fit?â
âI guess mom sold it. Â Remember we had that aquarium?â
âYeah.â
âShe got rid of that.â
Billy went to the glass door that faced the back yard. Â âBig yard,â he said.
âItâs not all ours,â David explained. Â âIt belongs to everybody. Â We have that little deck and the grill, but thatâs about it.â
