with David.â
âGeez, whose side are you on?â
âCome on, Greg. Â Sheâs a good mother and she has a respectable job and sheâs well-liked at school.â
âI want custody of David.â
Spencer shook his head. Â âYouâll never win. Â Weâve been through this before. Â Courts always favor the mother in custody cases. Â Thereâs nothing that would suggest Dianeâs an unfit mother, which is something weâd have to prove. Â You canât win a custody battle, Greg.â
âSheâs so closed up,â Greg said. Â âShe has secrets and I get the feeling that theyâre not pretty.â
âItâs not a crime to have secrets.â
âWhat if the secrets were crimes?â
Spencer looked sideways at Greg. Â âCome on. Â Diane?â
âI donât know,â Greg said. Â âItâs something that she doesnât talk about. Â It must be bad.â
âMaybe itâs just painful for her. Â Maybe it has something to do with an old lover or a family member or something. Â Who knows? Â Greg, it doesnât matter. Â Forget it.â
âIt does matter. Â I want David, and Iâll think of something. Â Promise me that if I find out anything useful, weâll file for custody.â
âItâs your wallet, Greg,â Spencer said as they reached the tee. Â âBut I reserve the right to refuse the case if I think itâs a no-winner.â
âFine.â
âYou go ahead,â Spencer said, indicating the tee.
Greg placed the ball and repeated the ritual of choosing a club, getting comfortable in front of the ball, and concentrating.
This time the ball went straight down the fairway a good three hundred yards.

Â
A shiver ran up Davidâs spine when the school bell rang at 2:45. Â It was time to face what some idiot had coined âthe music.â
David glanced across the room at his friend Billy as he gathered his books and stuffed them inside his backpack. Â Billy gave him a look that indicated, âIâm glad Iâm not in your shoes.â
The teacher, Mrs. Brownlove, shouted above the clamor, âDonât forget to do the study questions at the end of chapter seventeen!â
The students poured out of the room, but David remained in his seat. Â Billy made his way for the door and asked, âYou coming?â
David sighed. Â It was no use trying to hide. Â âI guess.â Â He got up and joined his friend. Â
âHave a good day, boys,â Mrs. Brownlove said, oblivious to the drama that was unfolding before her. Â
âBye,â the boys replied in unison. Â
Billy peeked into the hallway and looked both directions. Â âAll clear so far,â he said. Â David followed him out and went down the hall, straight to his locker. Â
They heard Mattâs voice before he had turned the corner. Â
âItâs clobberinâ time!â
âOh, great,â David mumbled. Â He shut his locker and walked in the opposite direction from where the voice had come. Â
âIf we hurry maybe we can make it out the side door before he catches up to us,â Billy suggested.
âHey, Boston!â Â
It was too late but they kept walking anyway.
âHey, Boston, Iâm talking to you!â
David winced and stopped. Â He turned around to face his number one enemy.
Matt Shamrock was the schoolâs biggest and meanest bully. Â For some reason, he had it in for David Boston since the beginning of the school year. Â Matt apparently didnât like the fact that David made good grades and it really irked him that David didnât have to take gym. Â On the second day of school, Matt had asked him, âHey, pussy, why arenât you in gym?â
David had replied, âDoctorâs excuse.â
