Chapter Six

Marc stared at his coffee table where the manila file still rested from the night before. It had been a long day at work, and even after showering, he still felt an air of gloom around him.
Stone, his youngest brother, had called him earlier inviting him over to enjoy their kill. “All the rowdies will be here so leave your cop hat at home,” he’d said jokingly on the phone.
Neither of his brothers had any sense of responsibility in their lives and they both seemed happy as could be. They were decent and hard-working, but nonetheless still pups. As much as he’d prefer to spend the evening alone, he’d agreed to come over. Maybe some downtime would help clear his head. And as much as they referred to themselves as rowdy, Marc knew they weren’t lawbreakers.
It’s going to take a lot more than downtime to get Heather Graham out of your head.
And there was her article, taunting him silently as it rested on his coffee table. He walked over and picked it up, immediately detecting her scent on it.
Those deep green eyes of hers appeared in his thoughts, so guarded, yet so full of emotion and curiosity. She ached to know him, and she wanted him. The desire surrounding her couldn’t be missed. It was a wonderful scent on her, such a rich, sweet smell. His insides hardened thinking about her.
Damn, he wanted to see her again.
Opening the file, he stared down at the neatly typed pages. FIRST DRAFT was centered at the top of the page. He glanced down, reading the first paragraph, and then skimming down the page.
Humans that can change into monsters live among us. Werewolves have walked among us for centuries. All of the myths are true. They terrify us yet they beg us not to be scared. This reporter decided to mix among these werewolves, discover the truth of how dangerous these mutated creatures could be.
Marc gripped the file so hard that several of the pages slipped free, and floated to the floor around them.
“Mutated creatures, my ass!” He couldn’t believe that was what she really thought.
The manila file began crumpling, the thick paper crunching against his grip. The little bitch needed quite an education.
“She wants to mix among werewolves, does she?” he said through gritted teeth.
He hurled the file across the room then stormed out of his house. It was a Friday night, but the thought that she might have plans didn’t cross his mind until he pulled up in front of her apartment complex and didn’t see her car. Nonetheless, he stormed up to the door he’d seen her enter the night before and knocked none too quietly.
His temper didn’t subside any when no one answered. Well, he would find Miss Heather Graham. And just to seal the deal, he put in a quick call to his brothers, informing them he would be bringing a date.
Now, to track down the adorable little bitch, and tracking people was something he did very well.
After a quick drive through town, scanning the parking lots of the restaurants on the main strip, he didn’t spot her car. Images of what he might do if he found her out on a date popped into his head.
She would be with him tonight. He’d set his mind to it. Heather needed an education. He would be damned to hell if that article he’d just scanned ever saw the light of day. And in her own words she wanted to know about werewolves. Well she was damn sure going to learn about them, and she was going to learn the truth.
He’d almost given thought to calling out the pack, putting out a search for her, when he drove by a small coffee shop and spotted her car parked on the street.
    Gotcha!
Parking across the street, he took long, anxious paces, not slowing when he entered the shop. Ignoring the young woman who greeted him at the counter, he scanned the dimly lit shop filled with humans, until he spotted a group in a booth along the wall.
Heather’s scent stood out easily among the rest. He moved with the silence of the predator, until he was at the edge of the
