if I do own a toolbox.â Tom snorted. âIs that a crime?â Behind his boldness, though, he appeared shaken.
Benny lay on the floor, peering under the bed. âIâve found something else!â he yelled. âThis!â He hauled out a rod-shaped piece of iron.
The captain swooped down on the piece, holding it up in triumph. âThis is a part that was taken from the engine!â He glared at Tom. âNow what do you have to say for yourself?â
Tom stepped backward, bumping into the dresser.
âAdmit it, Tom,â Max said. âDo you want to take all the blame and let Carla off scot-free?â
âAll right,â he growled. âSo I tried to slow down the ship. Will I be sent to prison for that?â
The captain looked solemn. âWhat you have done is very serious, Mr. Bishop. You also kept messages from being sent and from coming in!â
âAnd what about shouting âMan overboardâ?â Henry said sternly.
âI only wanted to delay the ship. I didnât mean any harm.â He glared at them.
âAnd you tried to hide in a closet so you couldnât be counted,â Jessie said, tightening her lips.
Tom bent his head. âYes,â he confessed. âIâm engaged to Carla.â He shot Max a hateful look. âWe wanted to stop you from getting everything.â He paused, then snapped, âYou always were Great-Aunt Edithâs favorite!â
âIâve called ahead, Mr. Bishop,â the captain said calmly, âand the police are waiting for you in Nassau.â
âWho cares!â He gave Max a wicked smile. âAt least youâll be late coming into Miami! You wonât get a penny!â
âLook out your porthole, Tom,â Jessie said.
Tom glanced at her, then rushed to the porthole. His mouth dropped open. âWeâre in Nassau!â He exclaimed in confusion. Whirling about, he faced the captain. âYou announced weâd be delayed a day!â
âYes,â the captain said, chuckling. âWe played a trick on you.â He nodded in Jessieâs direction. âGive that young lady credit for a good idea!â
âWeâve lost,â Tom muttered, sinking down on his bed.
âYouâll be locked in your cabin until we go ashore,â the captain said.
Tom didnât reply, still shaking his head in disbelief.
The captain and Max left, followed by the Aldens.
Sadly, Benny turned and gave Tom a last look. âIâm sorry, Tom. I liked you, but you did bad things.â
Tom covered his face with his hands.
âGood-bye, Tom,â Benny said softly, closing the door.
The captain locked Tom in, and they went up on deck.
âThanks for your help,â the captain said. âYou children are good detectives.â He moved toward the stairs. âNow I need to prepare for the passengers getting off at Nassau.â With a wave he was gone.
So itâs over, Violet thought. Instead of gaining money, Tom and Carla are going to end up in prison.
âHurry up, Violet,â Jessie urged. âLetâs see Nassau!â
CHAPTER 10
The Straw Market
O nce the all clear sounded, the Aldens and Max hurried down the ramp onto Bay Street.
Grandfather reached over and shook Maxâs hand. âGood luck!â he said.
âIâll make it,â Max said. âThanks for all your help!â
The chilren waved good-bye, for Max was already rushing to a taxi.
âTo the airport!â Max shouted and jumped into the cab.
âIâm glad Max is on his way,â Jessie said, breathing a sigh of relief.
âIâm glad, too,â Grandfather said. âHeâll soon be in Miami.â
âWonât Carla be surprised to see him?â Violet said with a smile.
âThereâs the police,â Henry said happily, pointing to two officers in white Bermuda shorts.
âTheyâre waiting to arrest Tom,â Jessie
