scooping up the last of her ice cream.
âLetâs go,â Henry said. âThe magic show doesnât start until nine-thirty.â
So they played a game of bingo, then went into the grand ballroom for the magic entertainment.
The opening act was a juggler who did all sorts of tricks with three golden tenpins. Next was a magician who pulled a rabbit out of a hat, and sawed a woman in two. For his final act the band struck up âYankee Doodle Dandy,â while from his sleeve the magician drew yards and yards of silk flags.
Bennyâs foot kept time to the lively music, and when it was over, he turned to Henry, saying, âI wish there was more.â
Henry looked at his watch. âDo you know itâs midnight?â
Benny gave Henry a sidelong glance. âReally? I could stay up this late every night.â
âNo way,â Henry said. âIt was a good show, though, wasnât it?â
âThe best!â Benny said.
âTime to go to our cabins,â Grandfather said.
That night Violet went to bed with a smile on her face. What a wonderful day. They had not only seen Nassau, but a magic show as well. It was hard to believe that tomorrow theyâd return to Miami. She was sorry to see the end of the cruise, but it would be good to get home, too.
CHAPTER 11
Sailing Home
O n Sunday, after the children had finished packing and eaten their breakfast, Benny said, âLetâs visit my favorite place.â
âAnd whereâs that?â asked Henry. âThe navigation deck?â
âNo,â Benny replied, grinning.
âThe pool?â Violet asked.
âNooo.â
âThe dining room?â Jessie teased.
âNot the dining room, either,â Benny said.
âThen, where?â Violet asked, sounding puzzled.
âI want to visit Isaac!â Benny loudly announced.
âAh,â Henry said with understanding. âThe kitchen. I should have guessed that was it.â
âYes, Benny,â Jessie said. âWe must all say good-bye to Isaac. We dock in Miami at noon, so we have time to do some visiting, too.â
âThe ship feels like home, now,â Violet said.
Henry laughed. âTrue. We know the ship from the engine room to the top of the navigation deck.â
âFollow me!â Benny said, leading the way to the kitchen.
Isaac, cleaning a refrigerator door, stopped when he saw the children and a wide smile creased his face. âCome in, come in,â he said, taking off his tall white hat and wiping his brow. âDid you come to say good-bye?â
âYes,â Benny said, feeling sad.
âIâm sorry to see you go, but youâve all enjoyed yourselves, havenât you?â Isaac asked.
âOh, yes,â Violet said.
âI wish I had a treat for you, but everything has been wrapped and put away.â Isaac put a finger to the side of his nose, thinking. âWait. I think thereâs a package of chocolate chip cookies that I could give you,â he said.
Jessie laughed. âWe just finished eating breakfast, Isaac. Besides, we didnât come for any sweets. We came because youâre our friend.â
âNo, no, I insist,â Isaac said, snapping his fingers. âI know! I have something youâll like even better than chocolate chip cookies.âHe went to a freezer, taking out a plate holding four, giant chocolate-covered strawberries. He offered them to the children. âTaste these!â
Each Alden took a strawberry. Biting into his, Benny rolled his eyes. âHmmmm, good.â
Isaac laughed. âI thought youâd like them.â He set his hat squarely on his head and solemnly stuck out his hand, shaking hands forcefully with Henry, Violet, and Jessie. Finally, he turned to Benny and scooped him up in his arms. âYouâve been my helper, Benny, and Iâm glad I met you.â
âAnd Iâm glad I met you,â Benny said
