blackout, but I donât think thatâs tha way it
happened.â
âWhy not?â
âI donât think that tha tissue was dropped
until after all tha people were outta tha hall, includinâ
the clean-up bunch. Otherwise it wouldâve been swept up.â
âYouâre right, DeeDee!â Annie exclaimed,
âYouâre a real-life Miss Marple.â
Doc, proud of his wife, said, âShe sure is
right about that! But, if the body wasnât taken outside until
later, then where was it during the second half of Bingo?â
âDo you suppose the body was moved twice?â
Art asked,
Now it was Annieâs turn to look at her
husband with pride, âArt, I think youâre right. That must be what
happened. That murderer sure was busy! Thatâs what makes it all so
very confusing. Itâs a hard trail, trying to follow a moving
corpse. And without a body, we canât get any help from the law.
Theyâre the ones who should be solving this mystery, not us senior
citizens.â She rubbed her temple, âCan you imagine! He moved the
body twice!
While she was talking, Doc pulled out an
empty drawer/trolley and examined it. âLook at this, will you?â he
said with excitement in his voice. âSee how itâs made? The bottom
and ends arenât solidâjust rails three or four inches in from the
sides and ends to hold the folded tables. When itâs empty like
thisâno tables in it, you could easily stuff a body through the end
rails, thereâs plenty of room, and when you put the drawer back,
the body would be pushed further under the stage. Thatâd make a
good hiding place.â
Art bent down to study it. âI wonder why the
killer didnât do that in the first place. Itâs a better hiding
place than in the drawer with the decorations.â
DeeDee asked him to pull the next drawer all
the way out too. Then she bent down to peer under the stage. âWell,
look at you!â Doc said, surprised. âYouâre squatting down like a
young thing. Guess your sciatica isnât bothering you now!â
âOh, ya know how it jest comes anâ goes. Iâm
doinâ okay right now,â DeeDee said. âPlease pull out some more
drawers so I can see better.â She tugged at her slacks to loosen
them around the knee; then she duck-walked under the stage. In
another minute she spotted something and yelled out to the others,
âBingo! Thereâs a shoe under here, anâ itâs a womanâs shoe, fer
sure! Itâs jest back here behind Drawer #9. Iâd say this is a very
strange place ta find a womanâs shoe!â The space under the stage
wasnât high enough for her to stand up; so she waddled over to pick
it up, then wiggled back out and thankfully stood up straight and
stretched. DeeDee held up a womanâs blue denim sneaker.
Annie shouted, âBingo, yourself, DeeDee.
Youâve hit the jackpot! Iâd swear that that sneaker matches the
denim jeans that body was wearing when I saw it. I remember
thinking that it was the same shade of light blue as the denim
jumper I was wearing last night.â
The four friends agreed that under the stage
was a very unusual place to find a shoe. And the fact that it
matched the bodyâs jeans made it even more interesting.
âWhere do ya suppose is the matching shoe?â
DeeDee asked.
Annie had a pretty good idea where its mate
was, she said, âIâll bet that when we find the body that there will
be a light blue denim shoe on its left foot.â
DeeDee said, âThat sounds right ta me.â Then
she hurried to the kitchen for more aluminum foil to wrap it up.
âGot to protect any fingerprints.â
âI think weâre done here. Come on to the
kitchen,â said Doc. âIâll make us some coffee.â
âThatâs a wonderful idea,â they all
agreed.
