ONE
School Spirit Day was coming to Blossom Hill School.
âWeâre going to have so much fun,â said Abby Hunter. She and her friend Stacy Henry hurried down the cul-de-sac together.
Stacy grinned. âIâve got lots of school spirit,â she said.
âRemember the fun we had last year?â said Abby.
âSure do,â Stacy said, skipping along.
âThe teachers did real silly things,â Abby said.
âI wonder what Miss Hershey will do,â Stacy said.
Abby was sure Miss Hershey would make things interesting. âI canât wait to find out,â she replied.
The Cul-de-sac Kids walked to school together every day. Rain or shine.
But today, something was different.
Abby noticed a girl sitting on Dunkum Mifflinâs porch swing. She had long, brown hair. Her eyes were closed, and a golden Labrador dog sat nearby. âWhoâs that?â Abby whispered to Stacy.
Stacy shook her head. âIâve never seen her before.â
Abby wondered. âIs she asleep on Dunkumâs porch?â she asked more softly.
âI canât tell if sheâs asleep or not,â Stacy replied.
Abby inched closer. âHello?â she called to the girl.
âHello, yourself,â the girl said. But her eyes were still closed. âYouâre Abby Hunter, right?â
How does she know? Abby wondered.
âWow! How did you DO that?â Stacy blurted out.
The girlâs eyes opened, but they stared straight ahead. âDunkum said youâd show up soon. Thatâs how.â
Abby looked at the girl. She looked at the dog. She looked back at the girl. Sheâs blind , Abby decided. And whoever she is, she knows Dunkum. But . . . she canât see .
âWhatâs your name?â asked Abby.
âEllen Mifflin. Iâm Dunkumâs cousin. This is my guide dog, Honey.â
âSo . . . are you visiting Dunkum?â Abby asked.
âIâm staying for a couple of months. My dad is overseas with his job.â
âHey, thatâs great,â Abby said. âWe need more girls in the Cul-de-sac Kids club.â
âSure do!â agreed Stacy.
âWhatâs a Cul-de-sac Kids club?â asked Ellen.
âWell, we live on a cul-de-sac. So we have a Cul-de-sac Kids club,â Abby explained.
âSounds like fun,â said Ellen. âHow many girls?â
âCounting you, there are five. You, me, my sister, Carly, Dee Dee Winters, and Stacy Henry.â Abby pulled her friend closer. âStacyâs right here beside me.â
âHi, Stacy,â said Ellen with a smile.
âWelcome to Blossom Hill Lane,â Stacy said.
Just then, Dunkum leaped out the door. He aimed his basketball at the hoop. He shot. Swish . Right through!
âHi, Abby and Stacy. Did you meet my cousin?â He dribbled the ball behind his back. He loved to show off.
âSure did,â Abby said. âWhy didnât you tell us she was coming?â
âYou needed another mystery to solve,â Dunkum said.
Abby grinned. Dunkum knew she liked a good mystery.
âSpeaking of mysteries, are you finished reading Mystery History yet?â Abby asked Dunkum.
âIs that all you care aboutâreadingand writing?â Dunkum teased.
âThat, and solving mysteriesâdonât forget!â Abby added. âSo did you finish my book or not?â
âYep, Iâll go get it for you.â Dunkum disappeared into the house.
Ellen giggled. âDunkum forgets stuff. I bet he even forgot to tell you I was coming.â
The girls laughed. Ellen was right.
In a flash, Dunkum was back with Abbyâs book.
Just then, down the street someone hollered, âWait for us!â
Abby turned to look. The rest of the Cul-de-sac Kids were on their way.
âHere come the rest of the kids,â said Abby.
Abbyâs little sister, Carly, and little brother Jimmy ran down the sidewalk.
