fascination.
Enjoy.

It made me smile.
âHowâs My Guy sound?â Liv asked as I slid into her car, idling outside my apartment building just after seven.
I grimaced. âHorrible.â
She laughed. âYeah, I told Hannah no chick flicks. Zombie Queen II ?â
âMuch better.â
We were meeting Erin, Hannah, and her friend Pete at the mall. I wasnât a huge fan of the mall. Shopping was fine, but there were always a lot of people there and lots of people meant more risk of seeing the mark.
âSo my friend knew that guy you asked about,â Liv said, pulling sharply in front of a car on our left so sheâd make the light. Liv was a frightening driver. If I ever saw the mark on her, Iâd demand she hand over her keys.
âOh yeah?â I said casually. I had to hide a grin, thinking of his note on the books. I didnât want Liv to read anything into it.
âYeah.â
I waited. Nothing. âWell?â
âOh!â Liv feigned surprise, looking over at me wide eyed. âYou want to hear about him?â
âHa-ha.â
âMy bad,â she said, smiling and weaving through traffic way too fast. âI thought you werenât into him or anything.â
âIâm not,â I answered, gripping the seat. âBut since your friend went to the trouble and all, you might as well tell me.â
âRiiight. Well, for starters, his family owns a funeral parlor.â Liv paused dramatically. âAnd he works there.â
âUh-huh.â
âYou knew that.â She sounded disappointed.
âYeah, I did.â
âBut I thought you said you worked with him.â
I had, hadnât I? âUh â¦â I could see that playing out the lie about my job was about to get trickier than just telling her they werenât hiring. I liked Liv and decided to come clean instead, hoping sheâd understand. âI do work with him.â
She glanced over, frowning. âSo ⦠he works at a restaurant too?â
âNo.â I paused for a second, wondering if this was really a good idea. âActually, I donât work at a restaurant.â
âYou donât?â
I shook my head. âI work at a funeral parlor. The one Ryanâs dad owns.â
âHuh?â Liv looked over, her nose crinkling as she squinted at me. Totally confused. I wished sheâd put her eyes back on the road.
âI didnât tell you guys because I thought youâd think it was gross.â
âIt is gross.â
âYeah, it is kinda,â I admitted. âBut itâs good money and itâs actually sort of interesting.â
âUm ⦠once you get past the dead bodies and stuff ?â
âRight.â
Liv was quiet and I wondered if she was mad, freaked out, or both. Or maybe trying to decide whether to take me home or just drop me by the side of the road. At least it was suburbia. I could definitely get back to the apartment from here.
âLiv?â
âYeah?â She was still frowning, but her voice wasnât angry.
âIâm sorry I lied. I wasnât sure how you guysâHannah and Erin especiallyâwould take it. A restaurant sounded like a more normal job.â
âIt is.â Liv flicked her turn signal. Left, toward the mall. I guess she wasnât going to dump me off just yet. âI donât think Iâd tell them about your real job.â
âNo, probably not.â
âTheyâd think itâs creepy, for sure.â
âBut you donât?â I asked hopefully.
âNo, itâs creepy all right.â Liv stopped at the light just before the mall and grinned at me. âBut where else would I get to hear about dead bodies and hot guys all in the same place?â
I smiled back, more relieved than I would have guessed. I wasnât here to make friends, but as Iâd learned in Kansas, being in a new place is hard enough.
