Joe, meâand yourself!â
Renie looked puzzled. âI donât remember. Did we get to London?â
âOh, shut up!â Judith threw her handbag on the bed. âItâs eight-thirty. Leave me in peace. Itâs been a long day.â
âIt sure has,â Renie groused, heading for the bathroom. âHey,â she yelled, âthereâs no tub, only a shower. I hate showers. They scare me.â
âBuy a fifth of Wild Turkey,â Judith shot back. âJust stop griping.â
Renie glowered at her cousin. âI think I will. I saw a liquor store across the street.â Whirling around, she opened the doorâand saw a tall, dark-skinned man in a police uniform.
Judith saw him, too, and couldnât suppress a little gasp.
The officer removed his hat. âAre you Judith Flynn?â
âNever heard of her,â Renie said. âExcuse me, Iâm goingââ
âAnswer the question.â
âNever heard of her,â she repeated.
He nodded at Judith. âIs that Ms. Jones?â
âYour guess is as good as mine,â Renie muttered, forced to step aside as the officer entered the room.
âIâm Lieutenant Alex Hernandez,â he said. âMs. Jones, Ms. Flynn, youâre wanted for questioning in the death of Dietrich Wessler. Would you both please come with me?â

Chapter Four
T he cousins exchanged beleaguered glances. âOkay,â Judith said, picking up her purse and jacket. âBut we canât tell you anything. We left before anything happened.â
âToo much oompah,â Renie remarked.
âOh?â Hernandez said, arching his dark brows.
Judith realized her slip of the tongue. âWe had dinner at Mad Ludvigâs. Our waitress told us thereâd been some kind of accident.â
The officer made a gesture for the cousins to go out the door. âPlease. You can tell me all about it downtown.â
Judith reluctantly followed Hernandez, but Renie stopped on the threshold. âDowntown? What downtown? Arenât we already there?â
âSorry,â he said over his shoulder. âI transferred here only a few months ago. I was a city cop for ten years. Come along, Ms. Flynn.â
âI am coming,â Judith retorted, already halfway down the stairs. âI prefer âMrs.,â not âMs.â I like being married.â
Hernandez ignored Judithâs remark. âWhereâs Ms. Flynn?â He turned to see Renie still in doorway. âHey, move it. Do I need backup?â
â Iâll back up if you donât stop calling me Ms. Flynn,â she snarled.
âFine, Mrs . Flynn,â he said, making a sharp motion with his hand. âI guess you like being married, too.â
âSometimes,â Renie said. âBut I like it better when you call me by the rightââ
âHey!â Hernandez shouted. âDo you want to get arrested for impeding justice, Mrs. Flynn?â
Renie crossed her arms and leaned against the doorway.
The officer took two steps toward Renie. âIâm not kidding.â He reached for his cell.
Pointing to Judith, who was at the bottom of the stairs, Renie gazed innocently at Hernandez. âWhy donât you ask her? For all I know, she might enjoy getting arrested instead of having her husband in jail. That episode made her fractious,â she went on, alluding to the nerve-racking events of the past January.
âCoz,â Judith yelled, âcooperate! We can sort it out downtown. I mean, at headquarters.â
Looking mulish, Renie slammed the door behind her and stomped downstairs so fast that Hernandez had to lean against the balustrade to keep her from bumping into him.
The woman behind the desk stared at the trio marching out the door. âTheir credit cards better be good!â she called after them.
âUp hers,â Renie muttered as Hernandez opened the cruiserâs rear
