Chapter One
Johnny Maverick kicked open the door of the dressing room. The door nearly hit Coach Smith.
âHey,â Coach Smith said. âWatch out.â
âIâm sorry,â Johnny said. He was a center on the Howling Timberwolves hockey team. âBut I just lost two loonies.â
Everybody on the team looked up from putting on their equipment. Some were already tying skates. They were getting ready for a big game.
âHow could you lose two loonies?â Coach Smith said.
âAll you did was go into the bathroom on the other side of that door.â
âI was pulling my coat off,â Johnny answered. He shook his coat. It jingled. âSee? I had a whole bunch of change in my pocket. Two loonies fell out.â
âSo pick them up,â Coach Smith said.
âThey fell into the toilet,â Johnny said.
Everyone on the team laughed. The Timberwolves all lived in a small town called Howling. They were in Calgary for a big hockey tournament.
âAre the two loonies still in the toilet?â Coach Smith asked.
âYes,â Johnny said. âRight on the bottom.â
Everyone laughed again.
âReach in and get them,â Coach Smith said.
Johnny asked, âWould you reach into a toilet for only two dollars?â
Coach Smith thought about it. âNo,â he finally said.
âMe neither,â Johnny said. âThatâs why Iâm mad.â
Tom Morgan stood up. He was the other center on the Howling Timberwolves hockey team. It was his first season with the Timberwolves.
âI have an idea,â Tom said. âI can help if Coach Smith says it is okay.â
âGo ahead, Tom,â Coach Smith said. âIt would be better if Johnny were thinking about hockey instead of his money. This is an important game.â
Tom looked at Johnny. âCould you give me
