Grayson Elliott,â she said in a grand manner. âI am Lady Briston, Millicent to my close friends, and I do think we are going to be close, close friends.â
âBernadette,â he said without thinking.
Her eyes widened. âI beg your pardon?â
âLady Bristonâs given name is Bernadette.â
Her brows drew together. âAre you certain?â
âFairly certain.â
âI could have sworn it was Millicent,â she murmured.
A thought struck him, but surely his cousin would have mentioned this. âUnless, of course, youâve married Lord Briston. Colonel Channing, that is.â
âDear Lord, no. Absolutely not. Such an idea.â She shook her head. âI am definitely not married. As far as I can recall, although I was once.â She heaved a heartfelt sigh. âIt did not go well.â
Gray stared. âThen Iâm afraid I donât understand.â
âThatâs quite all right.â She patted his arm and cast him a sympathetic smile. âIt happens to everyone on occasion. I myself donât understand, rather more often than not. Let me see if I can explain.â She thought for a moment. âI am Lady Briston. I have a brother-in-law, Colonel Channing. Right, thus far?â
Gray nodded mutely.
âI knew I was right.â She beamed. âAnd I have three daughters. Two of them look exactly alike, you know.â She shook her head. âItâs most confusing.â
âLady, er, Briston.â Gray chose his words carefully. âI have been gone for a number of years. Still, there are thingsââ
âI beg your pardon.â Fortesque stepped briskly into the parlor. Gray wouldnât have thought it possible from their initial meeting, but the man looked a bit harried. âLady Briston, I was sent to find you.â
âAnd so you have, my dear Fortesque.â
The butler slanted a quick glance at Gray. âI was to find you before you greeted any visitors.â
âThen you do need to be on your toes, Fortesque,â she said in a chastising manner. âWhy, I have already met Mr. Elliott. Mr. Grayson Elliott. Delightful name, donât you agree?â
âYes, my lady.â Fortesqueâs jaw tightened, but his tone was eminently proper. âYour presence is required elsewhere.â
âIs it, indeed?â She cast the butler what could only be described as a saucy look. Who was this woman?
âYes, my lady,â he said in an overly stern manner. âElsewhere. At once.â
âTo meet the prince, no doubt.â She leaned toward Gray confidentially. âI havenât met him yet, but I understand heâs very handsome and quite taken with one of the blond daughters. Iâm not sure which.â
Gray drew his brows together. âWhat prince?â
âAt once, Lady Briston,â the butler said again.
âOh, well, then.â Her eyes twinkled with amusement. âI shall make my exit with the grace and dignity befitting my position.â With that, she raised her chin and fairly floated out of the room, Fortesque a step behind.
Gray stared after them. Perhaps that was one of the odd guests who were so often to be found residing at Millworth Manor. Still, he was certain few of them believed themselves to be Lady Briston.
A young woman passed by the doorway, casting an absent glance in his direction. Less than a moment later, she reappeared and favored him with an interested smile.
âGood day.â
Her hair was a vivid shade of dark red and she was extremely pretty, with large doelike brown eyes and an exceptional figure.
He smiled. âGood day.â
She studied him curiously. âAre you another one of the players?â
âThe players?â
âMr. Fortesque said he might have to hire additional players, as this house is so very large and requires a fair number of servants.â Her gaze wandered over him in an
