didnât.â I couldnât stop smiling.
Greg was staring at me and then asked, âWhat about you? What brings you here?â
âIâm interning at Western Psych.â
âInteresting. What department?â He played with my fingers as we talked.
âEpidemiology,â I stated matter-of-factly.
âSounds different â I can tell thatâs your MO. Youâre different, that what I like about you.â
âYou donât even know me.â I responded trying to maintain my composure, but his hand was warm and his presence engulfing.
Greg kissed my hand. âIâd like to.â
It was a line and I knew it. I didnât care, he was absolutely gorgeous. Greg noticed everything about me â my earrings, my shoes, he made me laugh â and that made me feel special. Hard as I tried to dominate some of our conversation, he wanted to talk about me.
Greg gently pulled me to my feet and we followed the music down the hall to the PUMP meeting. âWhere are you from?â He held the door open and smiled at me.
I responded without looking at him. âSmithtown.â
âWho?â
âSmithtown, New Jersey. Donât tell me youâve never heard of it,â I teased, feeling a little relaxed.
âNever heard of it. I confess.â
âIt would probably fit inside this campus!â
We found a table by the door and sat down across from each other.
âHow many boyfriends are waiting for you to come home?â
âI donât have any love stories about a high school sweetheart waiting for me to return home. There were only two kinds of boys in Smithtown â the ones who wanted to have sex with me to say they were first and the ones who were afraid of my dad.â
âIs your dad the sheriff?â
âSort of. Heâs in charge of everybodyâs soul â heâs the Pastor.â
âSo youâre a church girl?â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âNo offense,â he said laughing. âIâm just trying to get the playing rules straight.â
I wasnât sure what was funny. âWhat are we supposed to be playing?â
âCome on now, donât get serious on me. Iâm just trying to get to know you.â
âYou havenât answered the question.â I folded my arms.
Greg reached across the table and took my hand. âNo games. I can tell by your smile we might be able to have something good.â
His words sounded good and I couldnât help blushing. We left the party and went for a walk around the Cathedral of Learning.
Alicia and I were in the car going home when I realized I didnât know much about Greg.
âI didnât see you all night,â Alicia stated with raised eyebrows.
âGreg and I went for a walk.â
âSo whatâs his story?â
âHeâs a resident at Childrenâs Hospital. Heâs from Harrisburg.â I recalled the only two things I knew about him.
Although Greg and I exchanged numbers, I waited to see how long it would take him to call. He called the next day and invited me to a movie that evening. That was the beginning of seeing Greg regularly. We talked on the phone almost every day and went out three or four times a week, when his schedule permitted.
âIâd like to meet your family,â I announced on our way to dinner three weeks later.
His tone flattened. âNo, thatâs not a good idea.â
I was confused by his response. âWhy?â
âIâm not ready for you to meet them. Not yet!â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt means,â his tone became even more direct, âwhen Iâm ready for you to meet them Iâll let you know.â
His tone made me angry and I pressed him. âWell, when will that be?â
He never answered or looked at me. We rode to the restaurant in silence.
âDani, itâs complicated. There are a lot of
