In this sizzling short novel from New York Times bestselling author Missy Johnson, a young journalist goes undercover in a world of desire—and gets seduced by the billionaire bachelor she’s supposed to be chasing.
Recent college grad Charlotte Lucas thinks she has found her breakout story. It all begins when she answers a provocative want ad posted by a secretive mogul who happens to be a prime suspect in his girlfriend’s disappearance. Young and inexperienced, Char has never been pushed to the limit—until their games take her to the very edge. Char has gone in looking for the truth, but now she’s in way too deep with a master who plays her body like it belongs to him.
Jaxon Murphy knows a lot more about Char than he lets on. Although the media has made him out to be a monster, he’s not about to come clean about his tormented past—at least not before he turns this good girl bad and sends her out to do his dirty work. After all, Jax didn’t make it to the top without breaking some rules. But as their play grows passionate and achingly real, Jax can’t resist taking a shot at something that’s bigger and more powerful than revenge: love.

book review: 4 stars
“Fight me. Resist me and you will be rewarded… “
I thoroughly loooooved this book! Every page, every character, every scene was getting me higher and higher! It may be a quite short book, but it’s magic…. 😉
Everything starts when Jess, one of Charlotte Lucas’s best friends, shows her an add in the newspaper written by the multi-millionaire, Jaxon Murphy, which states that he needs an “assistant” who will do what he orders. Charlotte being an unemployed journalist for a long time and Jaxon being the guy who was accused of a murder which keeps being a mystery, she grabs this chance by its hair, thinking that this will sky-rocket her career to the stars. But, it never crossed her mind that she may come out off it with other things, or better people, that she would call hers from now on.
There is one phrase that stuck in my head from the moment I first read the blurb:
““Jaxon Murphy is the troubled soul that every girl will want to heal.”—USA Today bestselling author R. J. Prescott”.
Well, I couldn’t describe Jaxon Murphy with better words. And I undoubtedly include myself in that list of girls! I would be crazy if I wouldn’t! :p He is one of those guys that gets into your heart immediately without doing anything at all. He’s not doing big actions of romance which will make you swoon. Instead, the little things he does speak more volume than any extravagant one. The irony, though, here is that whatever he does towards Charlotte is done by instinct and according his feelings. Even if he hadn’t realized it yet. Jaxon always had a very clear and sterilized view of his relationships and his life. He never was moved by feelings and acting like “a lovesick pup”. But as the people say: “Everyone finds his/her teacher eventually.” And he found it on Char’s face.
I hate what she does to me almost as much as I love it.
After that, the explosions, the passion, the love, the emotions, the feelings, the steamy scenes, were pretty much unavoidable and utterly irresistible. Both Char and Jax are two characters with a lot of baggage which only exist because they weren’t together. Since their first meeting I saw sparks flying around both around the pages and me and sensed the pieces of their puzzle finally come together and be perfectly matched. How could I not surrender myself over to them after that? Like I said, unavoidable……. 😉
This woman is turning me into a mushy mess.
I’m not a first-timer on Missy Johnson’s writing. Through the years I have stumbled on numerous of her books from which I have read a bunch and the others have gone straight to my TBR. Every time I get to read one, I’m becoming engrossed and can’t tear my eyes off it. And they may be quite short for my tastes, but, in Johnson’s case, the length doesn’t really matter 😉 The way she unfolds every story and character is amazing and captivating.
There is no possible excuse for not reading at least one of her books. Because that’s all it takes to get hooked! 😉
