want south.â
âYouâre such an expert.â Ben grinned. âThe Inupiat people will be begging you to stay.â
Zoe stuck out her tongue at him. Then she checked her little charge and laughed. âNosy has no idea what weâve been through for her,â she said. âSheâs fast asleep.â
âSoâs Guzzle,â replied Ben. âAt last!â
âLetâs find out where to take them,â said Zoe, hitting the hot key on her BUG for Wild HQ.
âHello there!â Uncle Stephenâs eager voice boomed out. âWhatâs been happening?â
âWeâve found two cubs,â Zoe told him. âAnd weâre heading back to the mainland now.â
âGood show!â cried their godfather happily. âThereâs a polar bear rehabilitation centre a few miles down the coast from Fairwood.â
Zoeâs BUG vibrated and a set of coordinates flashed on to the screen.
âThatâs where it is,â said Uncle Stephen. âItâs called the Puyuk Shelter. Itâs a wonderful place and has great success with orphans, Iâm told. They get the bears back into the wild without making them dependent on humans. You can take your little charges there.â
âWhatâs our cover story?â asked Zoe. âWe canât tell them the truth.â
âHmmm.â She could picture her godfather rubbing his chin as he thought about this. âI believe itâs time for the âleaving on the doorstepâ scenario. Put the cubs by the entrance, ring the bell and run like billy-o!â
CHAPTER
THIRTEEN
A bright morning sun was shining on the Arctic ocean as Ben and Zoe walked along the beach back to Fairwood. As soon as theyâd made sure that the cubs were safely in the Puyuk shelter theyâd sneaked back to their kayaks and paddled away out of sight. Erika was on her way now and was going to meet them in the village.
âHi there, kids!â came a familiar voice. âYouâre up early!â
It was Lukie, dragging his kayak down the beach to the water. The children ran over to him.
âI see youâve got your backpacks,â said Lukie eagerly. âGoing off on an adventure?â
âWellâ¦â said Zoe.
âJust being here is an adventure!â Ben said quickly. âItâs a fantastic place. I wish we had longer, but our mother will be whisking us off any minute.â
âWhere are you going next?â asked the fisherman.
Ben looked blank so Zoe jumped in. âMum likes to surprise us,â she said with a smile. âItâs a sort of mystery tour.â She glanced at the gear in his boat. âAre you going fishing?â
âI am,â said Lukie. âIâm really glad I didnât risk it yesterday. That was one hell of a storm that came over. Did you hear it?â
âWe certainly did!â said Ben, giving Zoe a quick glance.
âYou wouldnât have wanted to be out in it, I can tell you!â declared the fisherman. âVery dangerous. But todayâs perfect for fishing.â He jerked a thumb towards the road that led down to the water. âI think your taxiâs here.â
Ben and Zoe looked round. A dog sledge was gliding along the road towards them, driven by Charlie. Erika was waving at them from the back.
âHave a good trip!â said Lukie.
âAnd you,â replied Zoe.
âHope you donât meet any more bears,â added Ben.
âSo do I!â laughed Lukie, as the children ran off towards their taxi.
Later that day, back at Wild HQ, Ben and Zoe watched anxiously with Erika as Uncle Stephen called up the Puyuk Shelter website.
They were wasting no time in checking on the progress of the cubs.
âI wonât ever forget that moment,â said Zoe as the site loaded. âWhen we put the cubs down and rang the bellâ¦â
ââ¦and then we realised they were still in their
