was confused, Z held a poker face, and J kept smiling.
âHowâd you know?â Z asked.
âWhen you guys came over here before. When you first told Mom and Dad,â I said. âI heard.â
âYou were listening?â Mom asked.
âIt was kind of hard not to.â
âWhy didnât you say something?â Dad asked.
âI donât know. Why didnât you?â
This one was a second bomb, a smaller one, but I could see the blast in a wave that passed over everyoneâs faces. J was still the only one smiling.
âI didnât think it was right to confuse you like that,â said my mom.
âI think weâre all pretty confused,â said J.
âSome more than others,â Mom snapped.
âWhoa,â Z said, âMom. Not here, okay?â
We all turned to look at Mom, whose face had instantly flushed bright red.
âIâm sorry,â she said in a small voice. âJen, I apologize.â
J had flinched a little at Momâs words, but didnât seem too fazed.
âItâs fine,â she said. âWeâre asking for a lot here, I know. Itâs hard for you guys, for all of us.â
âItâs no excuse,â said Mom.
âWell, anyway,â J said turning to me, âsorry about leaving you out of the loop, Jo. Or trying to, anyway.â
âIt wasnât right,â Dad said.
âNo,â Z said, âit wasnât.â
âOkay,â I said, âsure. Itâs, uh, itâs fine.â
âWe just wanted to wait until things were a bit more ⦠decided,â Mom said. âWe wanted to have an idea of what our lives were going to look like, moving ahead, before we told you what was going on.â
âYou guys donât have to baby me,â I paused. Baby . What a dumb word to choose. âYou could have just told me.â
âYes, youâre right,â Dad said. âAnyway, we know that now.â
âSo Zim and Jen are going to have the baby and live in Zimâs old room?â I asked. When I finally said the words out loud it sounded so ridiculous that I was almost embarrassed, though I couldnât tell if it was for me or for them.
âNot exactly,â said Z. âWeâll be staying there for now, though.â
âWeâre going to have to get a bit creative once the babyâs born,â said my dad. âIâm going to renovate the basement so itâs more of an apartment. So the two of them â well, three I guess â can have some privacy.â
âAnd youâre definitely going to have it?â I asked. âI mean, keep it?â
âYour mom and I have been helping these guys sort out their options.â
âYup,â J said, âand this is our choice. Weâre going to have the baby together. Zimâs going to be an amazing dad.â
Z rubbed her leg and nodded.
âWhat about Jenâs family?â I asked, afraid to even look at her, afraid of how real this was all becoming. Surprised, though, that my mouth seemed to be asking questions without my brainâs consent. All the stuff Iâd been wondering about since I first heard, but had been too anxious to think about.
âIâm not really in touch with my family,â she said.
âOh. Sorry. Um, why not?â
âItâs complicated,â said Z.
âSorry,â I said again.
âDonât be,â said J, giving me another warm, meaning-it smile.
âAre you guys going to get married?â
âWe might,â said Z.
âWe may,â said J.
âThey should,â Mom said.
âBut itâs their choice,â said Dad.
âAnd if we do get hitched, youâve got be my maid of honour, okay?â
âSure,â I said.
âWith combat boots.â
I giggled again, and Momâs tight expression loosened up just a bit.
âI think itâs going to be great having you guys
