abroad a whole lot.”

    “ Gadding abroad?”

Ted laughed. “Ah, yes. Old Matthew Henry’s words for a woman who will not stay home. He felt that once a month was sufficient for a woman to leave her home, and then only with the permission of her husband. How times have changed!”

Jason smiled. Lizzie would be stark raving mad if she had to stay home a week, let alone a month.

“ I wish Lizzie wouldn’t spend so much money. That’s my main problem with her. She messes our finances up about every month,” Jason admitted.

“ Why do you let her?” Ted asked.

Jason sputtered. “How can I stop her?”

“ Lizzie doesn’t work, does she?”

    “ No, but... ”

“ Give her a portion of the budget and put it in an account of her own. Don’t let her have access to the rest of the money.”

“ But what if there’s an emergency or she needs something.”

“ Do you really want to know how I’d handle it?”

    “ Yes,” Jason said tentatively.

“ I’d give her an allowance and tell her that’s what she has to spend. I’d leave her name on the bigger account in case of emergency, but if she touched it without my permission or a really big emergency, I’d whip her hind end raw.”

Jason felt his face flush, shaking his head to clear the image that statement evoked. “You’ve certainly given me something to pray about.”

Jason waited up late for his wife in the living room, his mouth set in a firm line. He was at the end of his rope. She didn’t make it in until nearly 10:30 pm, and she looked tired.

“ Hi Sweetie,” she said, “Sorry I’m so late. The women’s meeting seemed to go on and on. It was fun, but... what’s wrong?”

    “ Sit down, Lizzie.”

Lizzie’s face furrowed in puzzlement, but she sat on the edge of the sofa nearest his recliner. “Is something wrong?”

“ Yes,” he said with a sigh. He picked up their checkbook from the end table. “Can you tell me what this is all about?”

Lizzie flushed when she saw the entry he meant. Her eyes slid from his.
“ There wasn’t any money in the church budget for costumes for the Easter play, so I put some in on it... ”

“ Two hundred and thirteen dollars? Lizzie, this is ridiculous. Why couldn’t you just use the costumes from the year before?”

“ They were getting so old, and we had a lady in the church who offered to sew the new ones for free. All we had to do was buy the fabric. You even said yourself how good they looked.”

“ That was before I knew I paid for them!” Jason fairly yelled.

Lizzie’s eyes filled with tears. “Jason, you don’t have to be so hateful about it.”

Jason’s nostrils flared and he shook his head. “I can’t believe this. You go out and spend over two hundred dollars without even consulting me and then you say I shouldn’t be hateful about it?”

Lizzie rose to her feet, her cheeks flushed and her eyes bright. “I am not going to talk to you about this anymore.”

Jason grabbed her arm and pulled her back down. “Yes, Ma’am you are, if you know what’s good for you.”

She stared at him in disbelief as tears started to trickle down her cheeks. Her bottom lip stuck out a mile as she crossed her arms over her chest.

Jason picked up the other checkbook from the table, the one with the temporary checks in it. “This is your checking account,” he told her.

Her eyes snapped to his. “What?”

“ I opened a new checking account for you. I have put $1,000 in it for the month. All of our regular household expenses are to come out of that amount, including groceries and any clothing you purchase, plus your gas and running around money. Bills and big expenses will come out of the main account... ”

“ What do you mean the main account?”

“ I mean you no longer have my permission to use any account except the one I opened
