his pulse. âPlease be all right. Please!â she begged.
P.J.âs eyes fluttered open and he turned his head toward Reenie. âAre you hurt?â she cried.
But he didnât answer. He seemed totally bewildered. Barely conscious.
âOh, no, I donât
believe
it!â Artie cried, striding up beside Reenie.
âArtieâheâs hurt,â Reenie said.
âYou creep!â he snarled at P.J. âLook what you did! You plowed right into me. Marcâs going to kill me!â
P.J. didnât react.
Heâs still dazed, Reenie saw.
Artie slammed the side of the van with his fist. âYou ran a stop sign!â he screamed. âDonât you know how to drive? Whatâs wrong with you!â
Reenie slipped between Artie and P.J. âCalm down,â she urged. âPlease.â
Artie grabbed her by the shoulders. He stared at her, his eyes cold. âWhy is everyone always defending him?â he demanded. âWhatâs so special about P.J.?â Artieâs fingers dug into her skin. She could feel his hot breath on her face. âHuh, Reenie? Why does everyone love little P.J.?â
Reenie didnât answer. She concentrated on meeting Artieâs gaze. She knew if Artie decided to go for P.J., she wouldnât be able to stop him.
Artie, leave P.J. alone, she thought. Leave him alone. Itâs not his fault you and Greta are always fighting.
A horn honked behind themâloud and long.
Artie let go of Reenie and backed away, shaking his head.
Whew! That was close, Reenie thought. Relief raced through her as she watched Artie climb back into the car.
Artie stuck his head out the window. âIâm not going to forget this, P.J.!â he yelled. Then he peeled away, his tires squealing.
Reenie turned to P.J. âAre you okay?â she asked softly. He nodded. His eyes seemed clearer. âOkay as Iâll ever be,â he told her glumly.
âMarc went totally ballistic over what Artie did to his car,â Greta told the others the next day at lunch.
âI donât blame him,â Sean muttered.
âIt wasnât Artieâs fault,â Reenie reminded them. âP.J. ran the stop sign.â
Reenie noticed Liz staring down at her plate. Poor Liz, she thought. It must be tough having a brother like P.J. She must feel she has to protect him all the time.
Reenie glanced over at Liz. Ty was leaning close to her, whispering something that made Liz smile a little. Reenie smiled, too. At least Liz and Ty are getting together, she thought. Now maybe Liz wonât worry about P.J.
all
the time.
âEver since Artie started running around with Marc, he acts crazy,â Greta complained. âItâs like Marc has turned him into another person.â
âAre they still friends?â Ty asked. âI mean, after Artie wrecked his car and all?â
âIâm not sure,â Greta answered.
âMaybe they wonât run around together anymore,â Liz suggested.
âI doubt it would make any difference,â Greta replied. âArtie seems to have become permanently weird.â She took a bite of her carrot, then tossed it down. âOkay, who has chocolate?â she demanded.
Reenie handed her half a chocolate chip cookie.
Sean cleared his throat. âI have a major announcement.â
We could use a new topic of conversation, Reenie thought. Anything that doesnât involve P.J., Artie, or Marc.
âReenieâs parents are going to be away for a few days,â Sean announced. âIâm trying to talk her into throwing a Christmas party.â
âHey, awesome!â Ty exclaimed.
âYeah, good idea!â Greta agreed.
âIâll come,â Liz added.
âItâs unanimous,â Sean declared. âEverybody thinks you should do it.â
âIâll think about it,â Reenie told them. âButâIâm not sureââ
âCome on,
